Resourcing for Her
FOR HER
The FOR HER project is dedicated to renovating Olgulului Primary School and constructing a dormitory to accommodate at least200 additional girls. In this pastoralist Maasai community, deep-rooted cultural norms often place greater value on marriage and domestic responsibilities for girls rather than education. FGM and child marriage are still widely practiced, with many girls being pulled out of school and married off at a young age. Economic hardships further limit opportunities, as familiesprioritize boys’ education while girls face the burden of household chores, making it difficult for them to focus on school. Additionally, logistical challenges such as long distances to school, inadequate boarding facilities, and the lack of gender-sensitive sanitation make it even harder for girls to stay in school. By improving the school’s infrastructure, the project addresses these socio-cultural, economic, and logistical barriers that prevent girls in Olgulului, Kajiado County, from accessing and thriving in education.
The Malkia G. Takey (G.T) Scholarship Fund
The Malkia G. T Scholarship Fund is transforming the lives of vulnerable girls and teenage mothers by ensuring they stay in school and access quality education. This fund is named in honor of the remarkable Maasai educationalist, the late Gaddiel Takey (G.T) Salaash. G.T’s fortunate access to education not only had a positive influence on his immediate family but also extended to his community, particularly benefiting the women he supported through adult learning.
Our aspiration is that this fund will provide young girls with the opportunity to become catalysts for change in their own lives and that of their generation. Currently the fund supports 37 vulnerable girls and 20 teenage mothers by removing financial barriers that often lead to early marriages, teenage pregnancies, and harmful cultural practices like FGM.
By easing the financial strain on families, the scholarship fund fosters community support for girls’ education, allowing them to focus on their academic and personal growth. Through this investment, we are not only empowering individual girls but also paving the way for a more equitable and promising future for entire communities
