Child Safeguarding Policy

The Malkia Initiative enforces a zero-tolerance policy regarding any form of child abuse, sexual exploitation, harassment, or harm. This binding framework governs every trustee, employee, field mentor, volunteer, donor, and contractor operating across our programs.

Zero Tolerance Standard

Our Uncompromising Mandate

Working natively in rural pastoralist communities requires absolute vigilance. Because we operate safe dormitories, in-school Crown Clubs, and emergency rescue escorts for girls fleeing forced betrothal and FGM, our duty of care is institutional, continuous, and legally binding under the Kenya Children Act (2022).

Every representative of Malkia is obligated to proactively prevent abuse, identify protection risks, and immediately escalate concerns without fear of reprisal.

Governance Architecture

Four Pillars of the Safeguarding System

Operational protocols embedded across our ward offices, schools, and boarding facilities.

1. Robust Recruitment & Vetting

All candidates undergo mandatory police clearance (Certificate of Good Conduct), multiple reference audits with previous employers, and explicit safeguarding interviews prior to field deployment.

2. Mandatory Code of Conduct

Every contractor, donor, researcher, and volunteer must sign the Malkia Child Protection Code, agreeing to restrictions on 1-on-1 contact, unaccompanied visits, and unauthorized photography.

3. Ethical Imagery & Data Dignity

Strict prohibition against exploitative imagery. Beneficiary identities, Manyatta locations, and trauma disclosures are permanently anonymized to prevent community stigmatization.

4. Mandatory Escalation Timelines

Any suspicion or report of child abuse must be formally documented within 12 hours and escalated to the sub-county Children's Officer and National Police within 24 hours.
