KUZA Program

Addressing foundational literacy and numeracy gaps for children in Grades 2, 3, and 4 across Kajiado Central Sub-county. We bridge early learning deficits to ensure pastoralist girls build the cognitive mastery required to transition into secondary education.

The Foundational Blockage

Level-Based Intervention, Not Age-Based Assumptions

In rural pastoralist schools, children often reach Upper Primary unable to read basic sentences or solve simple arithmetic. Irregular school attendance driven by pastoral cattle migrations and water fetching leaves students stranded behind standard grade curricula.

KUZA introduces structured, level-based remedial facilitators who regroup learners according to their actual learning competency rather than age. By isolating numeracy and reading mechanics in daily sessions, students transition from non-readers to fluent decoders within 120 instructional days.

Baseline Level Profiling

Learners are evaluated individually using simple reading and numeracy diagnostic tools to identify distinct skill levels, avoiding standard rote memorization barriers.

Decodable Mother-Tongue Bridges

Integrating local Maa phonetic vocabulary alongside national English and Swahili readers to build phonetic fluency without cultural alienation.

Community Facilitator Pairing

Equipping localized female teaching assistants from the community to lead remedial clusters, providing empathetic role models directly in classrooms.
